 SCENE IV Part B
|
JOCASTA
Well, the story seems to be, at the crossing of three roads.
OEDIPUS
Yeah, but where? What place?
JOCASTA
Hmmm. I think it was in Phocis. Where branch roads from Delphi and Daulis meet.
OEDIPUS
How long ago, exactly, did this happen?
JOCASTA
Oh, I don't know. Just before you showed up to save us from the Sphinx.
OEDIPUS
Oh…that's not good…
JOCASTA
What? What's wrong?
OEDIPUS
What did Laius look like? How old was he?
JOCASTA
He was tall and he had a few grey hairs. Great ass. But he always worked out his upper body and never touched his legs so that looked kind of funny. The guards used to call him chicken legs…but they've got a funnier name for you [Guards cough and look around innocently hoping Oedipus doesn't pick up on that comment] But Laius' build was kind of like yours. Of course, you're way hotter. And younger. Yummy.
OEDIPUS
Ohhhhhhh. That's not good. That's verrrry not good.
JOCASTA
What do you mean very not good. You're making me nervous here.
OEDIPUS
Ohhh. This is very not good bad. That Oracle may be correct…[Pause] but it doesn't make sense…
JOCASTA
Oh god. What do you mean? What doesn't make sense?
OEDIPUS
Laius, did he have just a few men with him…or…like… a whole frickin' army?
JOCASTA
He was just riding in a mule cart. There were only four people with him…and one was a herald.
OEDIPUS
Oh fuck!! Dammit. Wait, who was the guy that escaped?
JOCASTA
He was a serf.
OEDIPUS
Damn. Is he still with us?
JOCASTA
Why no. It was strange. As soon as he returned and saw that I was married to you, he clasped his chest and I thought he was going to have a heart attack. And then he asked to be reassigned to the hills, as far away from the sight of Thebes as he could. He was a good slave and looked pretty rough, so I allowed it. It was kind of strange, but entirely unrelated, I'm sure.
OEDIPUS
Well, we NEED to talk to him.
JOCASTA
Ok, but why?
OEDIPUS
Oh, this is all too horrible to comprehend. I won't say any more until my suspicions can be laid to rest. Let me question him first.
JOCASTA
Fine. Don't talk to me. I'm just your wife and lover. No need to confide in ME what's wrong. Sure, that's for SLAVES in distant lands. You don't love me…
