Selling your stuff!
With corporate conglomeration clamping down on options for outsiders to sell or distribute their books, it can be quite difficult to break in or even get a fair shake as an independent. Thankfully, the uprise of independent authors is creating an upswell of independent friendly distributors and booksellers. Here are some to be recommended.
Canada Books Online: (Canada)
Canada Books Online is the sort of bookstore I was lamenting didn't exist about two days before I stumbled across it. It's standard practice in the book industry for bookstores to charge between 50-60% commission on booksales. Not only that, but it's also standard practice that the publisher has to take back any books that the store doesn't sell. In essense, they put the book on their shelf, with no incentive to sell it and no risk on their behalf. If it sells, they make more than half of the sale price and if it doesn't, the writer eats it. On top of this, most corporate bookstores won't even consider stocking an independent author on their shelves and even if they do, their reputation for paying authors for books is dismal. Canada Books Online seems to be working directly against this mentality, stocking a healthy range of independent books and asking the standard retail price of 30%. If we want to receive better treatment for our hard work, we need to support places like Canada Books Online. You can support by buying from them, you can support by submitting your books for consideration by them.
