Bookmaking necessities and other stuff!

While the process of making a book is actually really simple - hey, it's been around longer than the car, the TV, the radio, even the bicycle - sometimes the items needed aren't the easiest to find. Normally, the modern world has made the process quite difficult, so you'll need to know how or where to find a barcode, or get an ISBN.

If you're lucky enough to be a publisher in Canada, you can get ISBNs for free, unlike in the US where you have to pay for them and can only buy them in bulk. This is the government agency in charge of handling them. Be warned, while the ISBN is free, you'll have to 'donate' a copy or two of your book to Collections Canada for their archives. But, as far as I'm concerned, that's publicity! All around a great thing!

If your printer doesn't give you a barcode on your book, or if you're not using a printer, or otherwise need a barcode, you can get one made here for about $10 U.S. I've used them and it's pretty convenient and very quick.
