Other Sites by Independent Authors:
I'm not the only wacko out there. There's loads of us! Below are a bunch of the better independent author sites. I don't like all of them (the sites, not the authors), but have selected ones that are gaurunteed to be useful/interesting.
Wred Fright:
Wred's a fellow ULA member and a bit of a crazy (like most of us). He's got a sense of humour not too dissimilar from mine and funky website full of song files from his bands, writing, reviews and a veritable gag bag of other tricks.
Jeff Lemire
Jeff is a friend and comic artist from Toronto. He is largely responsible for me taking the final plunge into independent author-hood. He work is very expressive, loose brushwork. His writing is both unique and populist, dark and humorous. A man clearly with a lot of talent. You should check out his site and not just because he's a friend.
Rob Taylor:
Rob Taylor is a great poet. You should check out some of his stuff on his blog.
Jack Saunders:
Jack Saunders has written over 250 books. All of them have been published, but none in the sense that most people would use the term 'publishing'. They are run off xeroxes, published to the web, or, in good situations, picked up by radical small presses. Jack is a veteran of the underground scene and has been doing this longer than the rest of the authors on this page, including me, combined.
It can take a while to get into Jack's work, particularly because his voice and style are totally unique. Something you can't say about most artists. While most artists aren't as prolific as Jack, most writers churn out 50 times their published work in stuff that never makes it to the press, never gets finished. What you see is a lot of self-editing. Jack's philosohpy is in opposition to this. Instead what you get is much more personal writing. A constant stream of little self-contained thoughts, poetic waxings on a whole slew of related and unrelated topics, novels where the distinction between the characters and the novelist aren't always clear. Check out his site and see if it's for you.
Yul Tolbert
It's hard not to like Yul Tolbert - at least, without having met him in person, which I haven't. His art and it's subjects are refreshingly open. Yul makes no bones about writing/drawing about what he wants to write/draw about from science (he LOVES science) to long toenail-giantess fetishes, to working at McDonalds or cats that whine, his cartoons are interesting no matter what. I recommend the experience of surfing through Yul's wild, funny world.
Warning: Yul's site does not, currently, play well with Firefox.
Brady Russell
A political organizer and man of many underground talents from fiction to poetry to comics. His site has a number of samples of the aforementioned art styles. I highly recommend his audio 'homilies' which you can listen to online. Funny and understatedly poignant.
* Note: Know a site you think should be on this list or found a dead link? Drop me a line and let me know.
