You've probably heard about spyware and adware. They're kind of like viruses that work for commercial organizations, installing themselves on your computers to gather all sorts of valuable information about you and otherwise direct you towards monetarily supporting their interests. This can be anything from relatively benign spying, like watching which sites you visit, to the most damanging, like hijacking your browser and constantly directing it to porn sites. Spybot is a free program that checks your computer, illeminates these programs and bans future ones from ever coming on board. You'll be amazed how much stuff is on there already.

Like Spybot above, this program is free for use and an absolute must have. Ad-Aware focuses more on the brazen adware installed on your computer by all sorts of corporations. It seems to catch a lot of stuff that spyware doesn't, although it's focus is slightly different. In combination with Spybot Search & Destroy (focusing mostly on spyware), Adaware should keep your computer free of all sorts of junk. Combined with a reliable virus program, this tri-fecta should keep your computer spot-free.

If you haven't heard of FireFox yet, I don't know what you've been doing. It's an amazing browsing alternative to Internet Explorer. Highly customizable, progressively designed and with loads of great features. Fight Microsoft, who's only interest in the internet is dominating it. In the 5 years their browser has dominated the Internet, they have put practically no work into improving it. Trust me, it's a great program and a breath of fresh air. Plus, like everything else on this page, it's free.
