fathers of the little darlings

with their Wall Street Journals,
Daily Investors, Forbes Magazines
and their daughters in bars,
smashed on LIT’s, white tequila
shooters, jello sliders: blue, yellow,
red ones, as long as they're vodka,
who cares about the color?
Little darlings making the staff,
designer underwear on the back bar
between rye bottles and five
dollar cordials, C cups and thong
panties, no doubt about what they
are doing there on the wood or
in the cellar, after hours and after
dawn, the security tapes are quite
clear about their command performances,
the little darlings can do it all,
have been around the world without
leaving Albany on the midnight,
on the orient express, their cell phones
calling home desperate, funds are
needed fast, their creditors don’t take
Master Card, Visa, American Express,
are way beyond the gold and the platinum
standards, hard cash only for hard bodies,
besides all the plastic is maxed,
Chase, Citibank, Morgan Stanley
will be calling any day now, any hour,
any minute with all the bad news,
the kind of bad news the fathers of
the little darlings cannot bring themselves
to explain, even to themselves.

About Alan Catlin

In a previous life, Alan Catlin, was an itinerant bartender, a profession he likens to being a soldier of fortune only much more boring. Usually. The best part of the work was an almost unlimited source of free material for writing projects and his placement in a high risk pool that finally got his life insurance agent off his back once he turned thirty....read more His work was twice voted among the Most Neglected Books of the year by legendary small press editor Marvin Malone of The Wormwood Review. He is currently the best kept secret in Schenectady N.Y, where he lives, through a series of coincidences, that defy explanation. His most recent chapbook is a sequence of neighborhood poems from March Street press, "Near Death in the Afternoon on Becker Street."
