Beneath strings of black and tan Japanese lanterns

unsubscribed women clutch purse-like children

We talk over their talk over the detached spook

of ice clinking inside elegant glassware

Pints of men wearing the faces of forgotten character

actors from the 1950's slump over beers as if in prayer

Rosewater eyes. Fly-specked neon. A dank illumination

of 77 last nights of the carnival, 77 yellowed Octobers
