Jonie McIntire is probably not someone you know. But most likely that girl in high school that sat next to you in some sideline class like choir...read more or keyboarding. Nice girl. Not too ugly. She was out for like six months sophomore year - what was that, to have a kid or car accident? Nobody remembers. But I hear she writes poetry or something.

She continues.
A black-eyed susan
among the tall grass,
The reedy stems,
the insistence
of color among the rough.
The sun rises
over the razed
schoolhouse of anger
and she lifts her head
to the sun each time,
how she got here
a forgotten detail
lost in the piled dirt
her roots have
curled their toes among.
