At the Algonquin
we meet in the Rose Room
a table full of us
friends and former lovers.
We greet each other
with a kiss, a hug
order cocktails, avocado salads.

We swap witty bon mots
brag of our latest publications
act as if we’re not impressed
by our setting
or its palpable ghosts.

But don’t be fooled.
When we leave
each of us believes
we’ll be as famous someday
as Parker or Sherwood or Benchley.
