The past
is where I was a child,
replicating black and white movies
in my back yard;
summer nights
before window screens,
fighting off bugs
with hands on automatic
like horse’s tails;
dreams as uncoordinated
as the way I ran
and so little remembered
they’re not part of that past.

But it’s also
weeping facedown on the bed,
shivering when bath water went cold,
holding breath in anger,
or shutting eyes tight
in a bid to disappear,
and every adult
like a habited nun,
faceless, without feeling,
body temperatures below zero
but wrists like tennis players
when wielding the cane.

The past
is a story
of what power can do for a boy
when he has none;
I can bear to tell it
now that I’m in charge.
